Disc injuries and compression aren't a death sentence.

Decompression therapy is a traction therapy that is applied in an attempt to decrease pressure on the disc to create a temporary influx of nutrients that will help the disc heal. Another purpose is to create a negative intradiscal pressure in order to allow the herniated or bulging disc to retract to the ideal position.

What is a herniated disc?

The spine is made up of several bones called vertebrae that are stacked on each other with a cushion between each one called the intervertebral disc. The discs are made up of a soft gel-like inside covered by a harder shell on the outside. These discs are what provide our spine with flexibility.

Disc herniations occur when compression is applied to the disc and the soft gel-like inside ruptures through the harder outer shell.

Common symptoms of a disc herniation or a "pinched nerve" can include:

  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Hip pain
  • Pain that radiates throughout and underneath the shoulder blade
  • Headaches
  • Burning
  • Numbness
  • Tingling
  • Inability to flex forward or rotate

Some common conditions related to disc herniations include:

  • Whiplash
  • Sciatica
  • Sports injuries
  • Arthritis
  • Inflammation, sprains, and strains to the surrounding areas of the spine

To avoid further injury or pain it's always best to call your Catoosa chiropractor to start the healing process sooner rather than later.
