A "pinched nerve" or nerve impingement typically refers to pain from pressure on a nerve root. The most common cause of this pressure is a herniated disc.

  • What is a herniated disc?
  • What are the symptoms of a disc herniation?
  • How does the disc herniation occur?
  • Chiropractic Care for disc herniations.
  • and more

If you are experiencing pain or discomfort and think this may be your cause, read on to learn more about how to find relief fast and how to continue managing your pain long-term.

What is a herniated disc?

The intervertebral disc is comprised of the tissue between each of our spine's vertebrae (the bones that make up our spine). They are comprised of a soft gel-like inside surrounded by a harder outer shell. The purpose of these discs is to provide cushion and allow our spine to be flexible throughout all of our daily movements.

Disc herniations occur when one of the soft tissues surrounding the spine applies enough pressure to the disc that the gel-like center ruptures through the outer fibrous tissue.

This pressure and chemical soup of inflammation can irritate the nerve root in the area and cause several symptoms in the direct area of injury or even refer pain to other areas of the body.

Common symptoms of a disc herniation include:

  • Burning
  • Numbness
  • Tingling
  • Back Pain
  • Neck Pain
  • Pain radiating around and under the shoulder blade
  • Elbow pain
  • Hip Pain
  • Pain that radiates down the leg
  • Headaches
  • Inability to flex forward or rotate

If left to its own devices a disc herniation could cause other conditions to occur or exacerbate symptoms increasing your discomfort.

Common causes of a disc herniation:

  • Whiplash/car accidents
  • Poor Lifting Mechanics
  • Sports Injuries
  • Repetitive motions over an extended period
  • Repetitive vibration (truck driving)
  • Poor Posture
